Shoutout to Breakthrough Miami Volunteer CHANGEMAKER, Samantha Suarez! ✏️

Making Breakthroughs happen as both a Scholar and Changemaker in our Village, Samantha has consistently been a valuable part of our Breakthrough Miami programming since her inception. Samantha has strategically used her transition from Scholar to Changemaker to strengthen her relationships with our Scholars and has expanded our community into her own personal world. A devoted Changemaker dedicated to her role, Samantha is often the first to arrive to campus and the last one to leave during programming.

Moved by her love for our Village and mission, Sam has taken it upon herself to recruit and empower several of her friends to also become Changemakers, therefore expanding our Village. Looking to create additional impact, Samantha is rapidly working her way up to even more leadership roles. In her own words, "I grew up in Breakthrough, and now I love being able to give back by volunteering and helping out whenever I can. Breakthrough has always been a big part of my life, and I’m proud to support and help out."

In addition to being a leader within our Breakthrough Village, Samantha's leadership roles in her community include membership in the National Honor Society and Biomed Club at her school, as well as serving as a mentor at @ShakeALegMIA.

Samantha wants to accomplish a lot in her future, but right now, some of her major goals are to study medicine and become a doctor, or to pursue a career in cancer biology studies. Regardless of her final path, Samantha also wishes to travel and explore different parts of the world.

Keep on being "breakalicious", Samantha! 👏

We're excited to share the winners of our 2026 #BlackHistoryMonth essay contest in honor of Garth C. Reeves, following this year's theme, “Celebrating Untold Stories and Contributions of African Americans in South Florida”! 📝

Every community is filled with heroes whose stories aren’t always written in textbooks. Through this year’s theme, our Scholars went searching for the legends among us; The educators, trailblazers, innovators, and changemakers whose impact lives in our neighborhoods, schools, and families. Their essays remind us that instead of history being something we simply read about, it’s something that's being written every day here in South Florida.

Shoutout to Breakthrough Miami Scholar and 6th-grade student at @ChristFellowshipAcademy, Emma Gudiel! 🍎

Emma consistently brings a positive energy to our Breakthrough programming. She loves being involved and engaged, and sets a great example for her peers through her commitment and enthusiasm. She is an honor roll student at Christ Fellowship Academy and goes above and beyond both in and out of the classroom. Demonstrating her "breakalicious" spirit, Emma has participated in many of our Breakthrough events, including our Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and our STEPS 5K fun run!

Extending her impact into the broader community, Emma is on two competitive softball teams where she plays first base and pitcher. On Wednesdays, she serves in the production ministry team at her church where she works the cameras during the service. On Sundays, she serves in the children's ministry team, taking care of babies and toddlers in the nursery. She loves baking, outdoor activities like biking, loves going to baseball games, and is always working on some form of arts and crafts.

When she grows up, Emma dreams of attending either @FIUInstagram or @UnivMiami and becoming a successful entrepreneur or lawyer, further giving back to her community and serving others.

Shoutout to Breakthrough Miami Scholar and 6th-grade student at @SomersetCanyonsMiddle_High, Dorek Norelus! 🍎

Dorek was selected as our Spotlight Scholar due to his embodiment of excellence, curiosity, and purpose in everything he does. Dorek shows up "breakaliciously" on campus, actively contributing new and exciting ideas. He also brings an energy that sparks connection, a perspective that adds to conversations, and a voice that makes the Scholar experience richer for his peers.

Aside from bring a bright Scholar and student, Dorek is highly talented. He can often be found singing at any given moment and has been known to writes songs in his spare time. 🎶

Anticipating his 2032 graduation, Dorek hopes to pursue his passions and dream of becoming an engineer and a singer at a historically black school.

Shoutout to Breakthrough Miami Volunteer CHANGEMAKER and Junior at Miami Sunset Senior High, Laura Arencibia! ✏️

Laura's patient and caring demeanor made her a clear choice for our Changemaker of the Month selection. Laura arrives to campus with a bright, positive energy and is clearly adored by her Scholars. She always takes her time to get to know her students personally and genuinely cares for their well-being. Laura currently leads our 5th-grade academic strand and our volleyball elective. She also served as our @MiamiSchools Summer intern last year. Looking to "level up" her Breakthrough journey even further, Laura is applying to become a Breakthrough Miami Teaching Fellow to continue serving our Scholars on a deeper level.

Outside of our Village, Laura is a member of her school's flag football team, @HIPHealthy (Health Information Project), and HOSA - Future Health Professionals (@HOSAfhp).

Anticipating her 2027 graduation, Laura is planning to remain local, apply to @FIUInstagram and @UnivMiami, and major in neuroscience to pursue her long-term goal of becoming a neurosurgeon! 🩺🧠

Shoutout to Breakthrough Miami Scholar and 6th-grade student at @MaterBrickell, Noah Kemp! 🍎

Noah has been the definition of consistency and positivity this year! Aside from having a perfect programming attendance record and arriving to campus with high energy, Noah is always on-point during class and actively contributes big and creative ideas to enhance any project or task he works on.

Noah always has a smile on his face that is contagious, spreading to his friends, our Changemakers, and Site Directors!

In addition to the "cool activities" on-site, Noah claims his favorite part of Breakthrough are the field trips, which is evident from his curiosity and the questions he asks. Furthering his impact, Noah has also assisted on a few of our engagement tours and can always be counted on to speak highly of his experience at Breakthrough.

Outside of our Village, Noah's hobbies include cooking and building things, hence his love for engineering. He also enjoys playing video games and spending time with family and friends.

When he graduates in 2032, Noah dreams of becoming an engineer so he can continue to explore his love for STEM and being able to create cool things. 🤖
